To save you need to be in a conversation or before you go to sleep on your bed. The save amnd load options appears as tiny almost impossible to read letters in the botton right corner.
Or just use the (android) menu button. If you don't have one, but f.e. only 3 sw buttons, ... either use custom rom like resurrection remix with an editor or if you don't use oreo (curr.) you might use xposed and a navbar editor or aps like Custom Navigation Bar. Oreo has a navbar editor included.
